Who Do You Look Up To?

A week or so ago I wrote about my Uncle Mike’s passing. In many ways he mentored me without evening knowing, and sometimes that might even be the best kind of mentoring. I believe in a subconscious way his talks were sinking in without me even knowing. All I know is that he gave me a drive that I still have today. I guess at 71 years young that’s a good thing.

Good mentors are everywhere. Parents can make excellent mentors if you are lucky enough to be from an intact family. Recent statistics on intact families (both parents) is at an all-time low. I believe I heard the other day it’s around 40%, and truthfully that number is probably a bit generous. That’s another reason our country is going through difficult times.

Probably one of the best ways to connect with a good mentor is through reading. Finding a book that speaks to you, and reading similar books until you find an author that is filling a void in your life.

For many of you who are trying to fill a void that has been missing for several years, it might be time to go on a spiritual quest. For me since I’m much older than many of my readers I’ve learned to fill a spiritual void I’ve had for many years. As you begin to mature more and more you may experience a similar void. We begin to realize what else is there? We’ve raised our children, they moved out of the house, you are now close to retirement, what else is there?

This next stage in your life when you have arrived might just be the best stage of all. You now have more time to explore the question, is this all there is? The answer is absolutely not. You now have more time to explore in depth all the questions you have about creation, your higher power, the Holy Spirit, your internal spirit, and so on and so forth.

They say these are the golden years, and I believe you have the opportunity to find all the gold linings that were missing early on in your life. Now’s the time start digging deep. If you are much younger count your blessings. It’s never to early to begin exploring all your options. You certainly don’t have to wait. Actually if you begin exploring early, when you do hit the age when you will have an abundance of time, you will be so much better off, and you can hit the road running.
